Echocardiogram Program (Echo) - Nakornthon Hospital
Package Details
An echocardiogram (also known as an "echo") is a high-frequency sound wave test of the heart. It is commonly used today to assess heart function, such as heart muscle contraction, heart chamber size, blood flow within the heart, heart valve function, and the location of blood vessels entering and leaving the heart.
Who should have an echocardiogram?
Now that you know the benefits of an echocardiogram, some may wonder what type of patient requires a doctor to order an echocardiogram. Although this ultrasound is safe and painless, diagnostic tests are often ordered in patients with the following conditions:
- When a doctor detects an abnormal heart sound on a physical examination.
- When a patient has no symptoms but has an abnormal heart sound, and the doctor suspects the abnormal sound may be due to a structural heart abnormality.
- When a patient has chest pain and other treatments have not improved.
Examination Procedure
- The patient will lie flat on a bed and a device will be placed on the chest.
- The doctor will use a gel-filled probe and rub it on the chest and under the breasts. The procedure takes approximately 20-45 minutes.
Preparation for the Service
- The night before the test, get a full night's sleep (approximately 6-8 hours). Avoid sleep deprivation.
- Avoid caffeinated beverages and smoking for 4 hours before the test.
- Eat approximately 1 hour before the test.
- Avoid strenuous activities such as exercise.
- If you take medications or supplements that affect your heart rate, inform your doctor before the test.
General Information about the Package
An Echocardiogram (ECG) is a high-frequency sound wave test that uses a safe sound wave to transmit sound waves into the chest. The echoes are then interpreted to produce images of the heart muscle and heart valves. This test measures the size of the heart muscle contractions, valve function, pericardial effusion, enlarged ventricle, and detects congenital heart defects, which can cause shortness of breath or chest tightness.
Ideal for:
- Those experiencing shortness of breath or chest tightness.
- Those who have been inactive for a long time and wish to begin exercising again.
- Those who wish to screen for heart disease risk, high blood pressure, or diabetes.
